I feel funny about that “thankful” construction too — but the feeling of being thankful is very familiar, nothing wrong with it I think — maybe I’m thankful to … not fate … but luck? chance? still sounds too deliberate. My grandmother once gave me hell for using the word “grateful” when she said I meant “thankful.” I still haven’t figured that one out. I’m going to go to the ref desk now and tell you about Will’s Thanksgiving scroll (you’ll get one next year I presume).
