A brief note on my del.icio.us linkblog

Tue 26 Sep 2006, 11:43 am

I haven’t had the time to do many of the longer posts here that I prefer to do, though the Long Queue of post stubs is growing. Instead, I have been using my del.icio.us linkblog a bit more often just to point out interesting stuff I have seen lately. del.icio.us only allows for a 256-character [...]

My friend Dan is in Turkey, coordinating the Global Partners study abroad program there. He is keeping his stateside friends up to date with a blog and Flickr account–guess who suggested that? :) I thought y’all would enjoy this from Dan’s latest post, where he runs down a list of things he has been able [...]

Why I won’t be at Internet Librarian this year

Tue 19 Sep 2006, 10:38 pm

Last year’s Internet Librarian conference was a great combination of a kick-in-the-pants good time and a valuable professional development experience (see my posts tagged il2005 for details), so I had assumed that I would head for Monterey again this fall. But a few months back, just as I was starting to feel bad about not [...]

I’m fluent in JavaScript as well as Klingon

Mon 18 Sep 2006, 12:31 pm

If you are reading this blog, you are–statistically speaking, anyway–also white and nerdy. So watch Weird Al’s latest and think “mon semblabe, mon frère!” Here’s how I know I fit the bill: I understood all the D&D and Star Trek/Wars references, but I have no idea what the original song is that Al is parodying. [...]

September 11, humor, and memory

Mon 11 Sep 2006, 9:59 am

"Statshot" from the Onion’s first post-9/11 issue I had no intention to write about today’s anniversary of the September 11 attacks, but Michael Sauers’ link to onegoodmove’s posting of the first post-9/11 Daily Show reminded me what a relief that show was to watch at the time. Which, in turn, reminded me of the astoundingly [...]

It would seem that I have Google bomb”>googlebombed my own catalog. I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry.

Facebook flyers for the library

Fri 8 Sep 2006, 1:41 pm

I admit this is a pretty “Web 1.0″ concept–buying banner ads on web pages–but it is an interesting idea that I wanted to share with other academic librarians. Facebook sells advertising “flyers” on the site. They appear in the left-hand sidebar below the navigation links, alternating with the more corporate ad banners. Generally they only [...]

Never a dull moment on campus

Mon 4 Sep 2006, 2:09 pm

Mostly deflated balloon with basket Updated 2006-09-05: Apparently our utilities didn’t take kindly to working on labor day. We lost power in many places on campus (including most of the library), which affected our data center, which effectively took the entire camups offline for six hours yesterday afternoon and evening. Welcome to CC, class of [...]

My OPAC…blows? And that’s…good?

Fri 1 Sep 2006, 2:23 pm

The September 2006 issue of Computers in Libraries has an article on the problems with OPACs, and the “OPACs Suck” meme. It might be a great article, but I haven’t read it yet. I’m too busy snickering like an adolescent over the title and the pullquote. The title is “Making OPACs Blow.” And the pull [...]
